Would you agree with the reducing of middle or high school electives such as home ec,shop,art,ect.?
Middle and high schools are considering or have already cut elective cources such as shop,home ec,art,ect.This can either bring up test scores(which is the main goal for some) or have kids experience "burnout" and forget to have a little fun in life.
Those courses are important, not to all students, but certainly to some. We all benefit from a well-rounded education. It doesn't hurt anyone to learn a little home ec or shop or art. School systems in many western countries have become much more academically oriented in the last 10 years, with the emphasis on standards, test scores, etc. Unfortunately many who make such decisions have very little understanding of how little test scores really mean. And academics are important, of course. But choice is also important, and not everyone will pursue an academic career.
School systems may benefit from and better serve the needs of their students and communities by stretching a little and looking beyond the 4 r's, but also by looking beyond the usual extras such as home ec and shop. School districts that offer entrepreneurship courses based upon local needs and economies see that students do very well in them and learn some excellent skills, though not all academic. Many students need preparation for life, not preparation for university or college. Other options could include parenting programs, environmental programs, community service programs, health and nutrition programs, child care programs, to name a few. Such a paradigm shift would involve funding and resources, both human and material.
Just a few of my thoughts on the issue, for what they are worth.
