Help me with Wet/dry filters with Bio Balls ?
Alright, as some of you might know, I'm getting an oscar, and I'm buying a 75 gallon tank for him. I found the tank I want (on craigslist) but it says it has Wet/Dry filters with Bio Balls. I've never had those, never even learned about them.
Can I just switch over to regular filters? Or do I have to keep going with the w/d filter?
Most important Q:
How do you work it? I'd ask the person, but then I'd feel stupid..So I'm asking you guys. . . .
I've also tried reading it up on the internet, but it just gave me a headache so I gave up.

They are generally better than the standard filters you are used to. They break down the waste to nitrates very efficiently. Standard filters work by removing the waste physically and chemically (when the cartridge is replaced). This is a biological method that breaks down the waste into something less toxic. They work best with plants as they can use the nitrates to fuel growth. However plants rarely work with oscars so you would have to rely on water changes. I definately recommend keeping it, but if you aren't diligent on testing nitrates and weekly water changes then a standard filter would be a good idea. The best option would really be to use both the wet/dry filter and a standard cartridge filter. They are pretty simple to use, as all they do is have water flow over the bio-balls which will have beneficial bacteria on them. I would ask the owner about how to use the filter to be sure you know how to do any routine maintenance on it. Don't worry about feeling stupid. There is nothing an aquarium owner loves more than to talk about their equipment.
EDIT: This won't allow you to completely avoid cycling as you are bound to have some die off. A sump is often used, but as it is not needed or mentioned (and no overflow visible) I would think this is very unlikely. The only maintenance normally needed on these is to give the bio-balls a quick rinse to keep waste from clogging them up. Use water taken during water changes to do this to avoid killing any bacteria. Very nice looking tank by the way.
